The Fitness Pyramid for Combat forms the base of our conditioning for training at Fight Fortress.
Obviously everything is subject to opinion, but this may help if you are looking to improve your game.
It can be likened as follows;
Aerobic (bottom of the pyramid) is obviously key to being able to breath through how ever many rounds/minutes you are fighting for. Controlled breathing and feeding the muscles with oxygen will, at some point prepare you for the top of the pyramid.
Endurance and as I see it, the muscles equivalent to the aerobic state for breathing. Endurance training will allow the body to repeat punch after punch, strike after strike without tiring to exhaustion.
Strength will differ slightly from endurance as it is, to put it in simple terms, the ability to hold a guy/gal in a clinch without tiring or to grapple in terms of controlling your opponent for a throw or takedown.
Power can be interpreted as the effectiveness of your punch/kick. After all, you aren’t going to have much effect on your opponent if your strikes aren’t powerful.
Anaerobic is perhaps the most distressing state we find ourselves in whilst training/fighting as it literally means ‘without oxygen’ and can usually only be held in for roughly a minute or more, depending on the condition of the athlete. Put it bluntly, you have your opponent in trouble but you have a very limited window to finish him/her off before you run out of steam and find yourself gasping for air.
This is where recovery would take place (and quicky you would hope) and you would return to the bottom of the pyramid and the aerobic state, controlling your breathing.
