The following is a true story. Just a few weeks ago, my wife Julie and I were enjoying a Friday night out with a meal and some drinks. What happened next took just seconds.
A man, sitting alone and enjoying a quiet pint was mistakenly accused of something. Two men practically set upon him and threatened him with all sorts of violence. At this point nothing had become physical but the guy was terrified and clearly out of his depth.
I watched the situation unfold and listened to the dialogue, taking note of positions, pre-attack indicators and how this man could get out of this safely.
Eventually the two men were persuaded to drop the matter or so we thought. As they left the building one made a call on his phone and in less than five minutes a group of approximately ten youths and men were outside, pointing in and making threatening gestures.
The man asked for my advice which I gave him. Within about twenty minutes the crew outside gave up their intentions as they could no longer see him.
All I had advised him to do was use practical and common sense. He moved to a seat away from the windows and to a different part of the building where he waited for things to cool down.
When his ride arrived, he moved quickly and swiftly to the car and was driven away. By this time the group had left the area, but this chap wasn’t to know that and was clearly terrified.
On talking to him before he left, he admitted he didn’t have a clue what to do if he was physically attacked, which thankfully never happened, but what if? What if it was you? What if you found yourself in this type of situation? Wouldn’t you want at least a fighting chance, no pun intended? Would you wish you had at least some basic knowledge of self defence?
Our lives are precious, the lives of our families are precious. Don’t we owe it to ourselves and to them to keep safe?
Take up a self defence or combat sport this week. You never know when you are going to need it.
